Port Moody

Port Moody:
Important Things
You Need to Know

The city of Port Moody is situated at the eastern end of Burrard Inlet in British Columbia. The smallest of the Tri-Cities, it was originally an industrial town due and had oil refineries, sawmills, a port terminal, and several plants. However, it developed into being a “City of the Arts”, with its employment now largely focused in arts and culture.

The Culture

Cultural venues in the city include the Station Museum in the CPR station, which was constructed in 1905, the Port Moody Arts Centre located in the original city hall, which was erected in 1913, and Civic Centre’s Inlet Theatre. National and regional artists are often featured during the Port Moody Canadian Film Festival and the Festival of the Arts.

The People

Named for Colonel Richard Clement Moody of the Royal Engineers, the city’s foreshore shows ample evidence of the Central Coast Salish people’s pre-European occupation. Based on the 2016 census and mainly because of the Europeans that occupied this part of the province, 68 percent of the 33,551 residents in the Port Moody is made up of Europeans. While 69.1 percent of the population speaks English, 5.6 percent speaks Korean and 3.8 percent, Chinese.

The Recreation

Port Moody is home to several of Lower Mainland’s best parks, including the huge forested Belcarra Regional Park, where you can find the Sasamat Lake, and the Rocky Point Park with its outdoor swimming pool, walking trails, and children’s play area. Although the best time to visit the city is summer, most of its forested parks with its coniferous trees are still pretty during winter.

The Transportation

Locals and visitors are encouraged to use public transit in going around and exploring the city. Shelters, connections for cyclists and pedestrians, and bus stops are available to provide comfort and protection during city travels.
