As the temperature begins to drop and the sun rises and sets later on in the day, it is a sign that the warm summer days are ending and the cold winter days are beginning.

For those who have fireplaces in their home, it also means that it is time to start lighting up ye ole’ fireplace to help keep their homes warm.

But before you do you might want to get a professional in for a WETT and SITE inspection in order to deem whether your fireplace is safe to use or if you may need to have some work done on it first.

WETT stands for Wood Energy Technology Transfer inspection of a solid fuel-burning system.

It must be performed by a WETT Certified professional for compliance with applicable codes and standards.

SITE is a set of standardised guidelines and procedures that are done in three levels.

Level 1 (Readily Accessible):

The system can be described as quickly or easily reached for inspection.

Level 2 (Accessible):

The system can be described as reachable for the purpose of inspection / evaluation.

Access could first require the moving or removal of a panel, door or other types of covering and could require the use of ladders and common tools such as a screwdriver, wrench or hammer.

Level 3 (Concealed Accessibility):

The system can be described as accessible only by invasive means.

This may require the removal of constructed area of the system or building to gain access for the purpose of implementing a level-3 inspection / evaluation.

It may also require the use of speciality tools and equipment.

So before you light up that fireplace this upcoming Winter be sure to give some professionals a call and schedule your inspection.
