Spring Cleaning Tips

Mar 2, 2016

Spring cleaning is a daunting activity to take on. All year, you wait around. On one sunny day in January you notice that your blinds look dusty, and you think to yourself: “I’ll get to you those come spring.” Then slowly, day by day, you begin to realize just how much you had putt off for spring cleaning.

Suddenly, the simple task of cleaning has turned in to an entire event. An event that, although overwhelming, is necessary. Not only for the simple cleanliness of your home, but also for your own mental and physical health. The cleanliness of our homes greatly impacts our physical health. Our home’s air quality depends on the cleanliness of our homes, and often, using chemical ridden products creates an even more toxic environment, as much as they may ‘disinfect.’

Furthermore, organized and clean homes have been proven to improve mood and productivity. So really, you can’t lose when it comes to spring cleaning! Except…I guess…spending your free day cleaning.

That’s why we’re here. We want to make the time you spend cleaning as short as possible…because let’s face it, you’d probably rather be doing pretty much anything else.

1- Clean your toaster

With all the grains and seeds we’re packing our toast with these days, our toasters deserve a good cleaning. First, unplug it. Then, with a thick pipe cleaner, loosen up all of the built up carbohydrates-bits in your machine. If your toaster has a removable tray, you’ll be able to remove that and dump the crumbs from there. If it doesn’t have a removable tray, flip your toaster over and empty the crumbs in to a trash bag.

Cleaning your toaster also helps prevent future fires!

2- Organize loose packets

You use more when you know exactly where everything is. the best way to keep track of all the loose items floating in your kitchen, such as tea bags or soup packets, is to organize them in to bins. Take a couple of smaller plastic bins and use them or organize these packets. It’ll save you some space and almost force you to use these forgotten  items.

3- And on that note, use clear containers to store…everything

Like we said, the more easily you’re able to see something, the more likely you are to use it. That’s why using clear containers will not encourage you to use what you have, but also to stay organized. You can more easily colour coat and sort when you can clearly see what you’re up against.

Furthermore, putting food and other belongings in clear containers means you have the opportunity to pick how much space you want that item to take up, depending on the container you select for it.

4- Make your home smell heavenly

Your house can be as clean as you want, but if it doesn’t smell good, it’s not going to feel clean. Often, when using natural cleaning products, they don’t smell very good. Our house is clean, the air we are breathing in is pure, but the smell of the home hasn’t altered that much.

Often, people take this to mean that their home isn’t clean. That’s why we found this little recipe that’ll take care of your scent-issues!

Take a little less than a cup of water and put it in a pot over low heat. Add lemon slices and a few sprigs of rosemary. Then add in a couple drops of vanilla extract. Let that simmer on your stove top all day long, adding water when needed. Your whole home will smell incredible.

You can switch out lemon for another citrus fruit such as orange or grapefruit, and use an essential oil instead of vanilla extract to customize the scent to your taste!

5- Clean out your dishwasher

Closets can be the cause of a lot of clutter in our bedrooms. It’s recommended that you clean it out every season, but we all know that’s not going to happen. If you decide to clean and organize your closet this spring, we’re here to help.

8- Clean your toothbrush

You’d be surprised just how dirty your toothbrush is. If you keep your toothbrush anywhere close to your toilet, it’s likely in desperate need of a cleaning. The easiest and healthiest way to do this is to submerge the toothbrush in white vinegar. Let it sit for roughly 15-30 minutes. This will kill all the live bacteria on your toothbrush.

9- Clean your oven

For obvious reasons, this is essential. We cook our food in here; we want it to be clean. Preheat your oven to 150 degrees Fahrenheit. Put a pot of water on the bottom rack of the oven. Then place one cup of ammonia on the top rack of the oven. Try to let this sit overnight. If you don’t feel comfortable doing that, put it in for at least 4-5 hours.
