4 reasons eco-cleaning is important for you and the environment

In our day and age, making a conscious effort to live green lives has become essential. Not only do our attempts at becoming more eco-friendly positively impact our planet, they also influence our health, and the health of our loved ones.

Recently, there has been an increase in research being released on mainstream cleaning products and services. The research reflects the sort of impact these products are having on the environment, and by extension, on our health. The results have been grim.

Life Maid Easy prides itself in offering 100 per cent sustainable and green cleaning services. Our products and methods are eco-friendly, ensuring that the impact we leave on our customer’s lives and the planet, is nothing but positive.

Below are the four main reasons you should switch to eco-cleaning.

1. Your health: Since World War II, over 8,500 chemicals have been introduced in to our products, be it cleaning or otherwise. Most of these chemicals do not receive any sort of approval by environmental agencies.

Air Quality Science recently conducted a survey where they cleaned homes and then measured the volatile organic compound (VOC) levels in the air. Two hours after cleaning, they found that VOC levels were 36 times higher than the acceptable amount. This comes as no surprise, since about 70 per cent of all cleaning products contain toxic chemicals.

Have you ever noticed all the warning labels on cleaning products, all of which warn us of the dangers these products could have on our lives, and the lives of our loved ones? This is not just for show. These products have toxic fumes, and using them to clean your home will make you, and those living in your household vulnerable to health problems. In particular, small children and pets are more easily and heavily impacted.

This could include irritation in the eyes, lungs, and on skin. In fact, many of the cancers that predominately impact women are linked to toxic chemicals found in cleaning products.

One must then ask themselves: what’s really being ‘cleaned’ here?

2. Food and water: Although many believe that cleaning products will only impact the air they breathe in, it is important to be aware of how we are also ingesting the toxins.

The toxins in cleaning products can be ingested in two main ways: through food and water.

Food: When we clean our counter tops, utensils, and cutting boards, we expose our foods to these chemicals. Residue that remains on these kitchen tools can get on to our food, thereby contaminating it. Furthermore, poorly washed hands can also contaminate your food. If you refuse to part from your mainstream cleaning products, make sure you thoroughly wash your hands after use.

Water: Washing your clothes, dishes, toilets, and washcloths causes the harmful cleaning products that we use to flow in to our own water system. These chemicals can’t just disappear. They flow back through in to local streams, lakes, and our own drinking water. Yikes.

3. Save money: When you invest in living a cleaner, greener life, you are investing in your health and the health of your loved ones. By removing these chemical and toxin-ridden products from your home, and opting in to a green cleaning service, you are saving hundreds, even thousands of dollars on medical bills. Switching to greener cleaning products and services can prevent asthma, skin rashes, and even regular migraines.

4. Reduce your ecological foot print. Help our planet: We all know our planet needs help. One of the most basic things we can do is to rid ourselves of products and services that aren’t natural and sustainable.

These products negatively impact the environment in a variety of ways.

Manufacturing: Many of these products use petroleum, which is a valuable, but extremely rare natural resource. Furthermore, the plastic containers they use to store the products are much harder to recycle and break down. Lastly, manufacturers use a lot of energy and water during the production process, further proving their business is unsustainable.

Use: As previously mentioned, these toxic chemicals find their way in to our bodies through their basic use. They also pollute our drinking water, and natural bodies of water. Furthermore, when these products are sprayed in to the air, they contribute to the depletion of the ozone layer.

Disposal: If the products are not used, they will either evaporate and pollute the air, or be dumped in to a landfill. This is dangerous because the toxic liquids can soak in to the soil, causing it to absorb all of the harmful chemicals.
